my friend who lived in russia this summer said that no one smiles there either and that when you come back to america, everyone looks like smiling idiots. everyone's obviously unhappy, but they're still smiling!
I heard a different version of this story from someone who lived in Russia for a while... she said that she asked her boyfriend, who was Russian, why everyone stared at her. He said it was because she smiled too much. She said why is that a problem. He said, because in soviet russia people who smiled were not to be trusted. She said why is that. He said because if you were smiling, that meant you had something to be happy about; if you had something to be happy about, that must mean you were stealing from the government.
I am not sure that there is a point to this story.
